Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Canada. One in nine women is expected to develop the disease during her lifetime, according to the Canadian Cancer Society. Last year, 23,400 women were diagnosed in Canada.
The Belinda Stronach Chair in Breast Cancer Reconstructive Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital will enable the development of patient education programs and clinical research to improve outcomes for women seeking reconstruction. It will also support the training of surgeons with special focus on techniques and procedures of breast reconstruction. It is estimated that only 10% of women diagnosed with breast cancer discuss reconstruction as part of their treatment.
This Chair will also serve to raise awareness and make reconstruction available to more women as part of their treatment.
